For me, the fun, and challenge, of writing romantic suspense is in the intricate weaving of the romance and suspense elements together. I want Lara and Zach’s love story so tangled in the mystery that readers can’t remove one without removing the other. To wonder, not only how they’re going to get their happily ever after, but how they’ll live long enough to get there.
In Over Our Heads is different from my other romantic suspense books because this is the first time I’ve used two amateur sleuths as main characters instead of having at least one of them be some sort of law enforcement or military professional. While Zach is a successful defense attorney, he’s not accustomed to the methods and lengths Lara will go to catch the real murderer, or to her blasé attitude toward the legality of such matters.
While Zach and Lara’s careers differ from characters in my other books, In Over Our Heads still delivers what my readers expect: a steamy romantic suspense story full of twists and turns that leaves them guessing until the very end. My personal promise to my readers is that I will always feature strong heroines who just need a man to love them, not to save them. And while my damsels usually find themselves in distress, they find a way out of it themselves. Lara is no exception. Though life has put her through an emotional ringer, she’s not about to let anyone or anything interfere with her mission to avenge her best friend and clear her father’s name.
In Over Our Heads is also special to me because it’s one of my NEPA (northeastern Pennsylvania) romances. Whenever I can, I love setting my stories in the parts of NEPA where I grew up and still live. It’s my way to pay homage to the region, and hopefully one day make it famous for more than just The Office. The town of Raven Falls in In Over Our Heads is a fictional town based on the real-life sleepy river town where I spent just about every weekend as a child and teenager. I also had fun reimagining the local legend of Campbell’s Ledge to play a prominent part in the murder mystery plot.
I can’t wait to share Lara and Zach’s love story with readers, and I hope they get as much enjoyment out of the harrowing twists and turns as I got out of writing them.
