"Answer me, girl. I grow tired of waiting. You don't want to add any more to the punishment you've already accumulated."

"P-punishment?"

Ink merely smiled, but his expression softened slightly when she started trembling; and he gentled his hold on her.

"I seem to recall you rather liked being punished, baby girl. Always pushing, always sassy."He traced his thumb over her lips, demanding entry, and she opened automatically. His eyes darkened, and he groaned when she sucked the digit into her mouth. A tiny spark of power went through Cherie at his reaction, and he narrowed his eyes and withdrew his thumb immediately.

"Nice try, girl. Now answer me. What do you see?"

He sighed at her whispered, "I can't," and stepped away and behind her. Goosebumps erupted on her skin at the loss of contact, and she shivered anew. Their gazes connected in the mirror, and she breathed a sigh of relief when his hands settled back on her hips, pulling her back against him.

"Shall I tell you what I see?" He lifted her breast out of the way so that the deep wound was clearly visible in the mirror. "I see a woman who survived. A strong woman, who should wear her scars with pride. A woman with curves a man wants to get lost in. I see my woman."

Something broke inside Cherie listening to that deep voice. The almost reverent words settled in her heart like tiny darts of hope.

“So you know who I am then?” In the half-light of the fire, she snatched her first glimpse of Viktor. Under the blond grizzle of beard, his square jaw was tense, unyielding. Those fearsome eyes now had soul, complementing his sandy coloring with an ocean of calm blue.
“How did you find me?” He lifted a poker and leaned in to stoke the fire, letting a curtain of wheat-colored hair fall and hide him once again from view.
Jackie fidgeted, curling and uncurling her toes in the comforting deep pile carpet trying to conjure up a convincing lie but there was just something about him that put her under his thrall and forced the truth from her. “A journalist gave me your details in exchange for a story.”
“Ah.” He turned to look at her with the flames of the fire reflected in his eyes. “So you thought you could screw my assistant, worm your way into my house and get the scoop?”
“It wasn’t … I didn’t mean to—” It wasn’t like her to get tongue-tied, to lose control of the situation. This man was unlike any she’d ever faced before.
“I let you get away with stealing the bracelet because I thought that would be the last I would hear from you, that it didn’t warrant unwanted attention for the sake of a few baubles. But what am I to do with you now?”
X-rated images of what he could do to her weren’t given the chance to develop fully in her mind as he stormed across the room toward her.

“You ever see her before?”

“No, I haven’t.” Rhy ran his hands down both bare legs and a slender exposed arm. He checked for broken bones, noting her supple skin and a clean woodsy scent.

Her blouse had an unusual design, made of homespun fibers. It had a diagonal cut neckline with tiny puff sleeves, pink and soft. Created from the same material, a short skirt flared, and was embroidered with spring-green leaves.

A tickle teased his neck again, but not from annoyance this time. He repeated the examination of her other arm. Tension curled tighter in his gut, suspicion spread like spilled wine.

Tilting her head with care, he pushed her dark brown hair from her smooth décolletage, sucked in a short breath, and froze.

“What is it? Snake bite?” Samuel raised the brass lantern higher and leaned over for a better view.

Rhy tapped his thumb against her neck. Designs a few shades darker than her natural color marred the creamy complexion. The millennia old skin formation carved its way into his painful memories. It started behind her ear, an inch wide at the hairline, and extended to the other side.

The words choked out of him. There was no use trying to hide his revulsion. “Wood Nymph.”

Mel's silver-gray eyes bore deep into hers, then sadness crept across his face. After a few moments, he turned away. “I won't change my mind,” he stated more to himself. “You may not understand, but I do this because I love you so much.”
Pain coiled around Breeana's heart. She clenched her fists. Rage and frustration mounted and streamed through her, hot as lava. “You do this because you love me?” She jumped at him, grabbing the front of his shirt, balling it up in her fists. “You break my heart into a million pieces and you have the gall to say you do so because you love me?”
“Yes. Believe it or not, it's the truth.”
Breeana shoved him and stumbled backwards. “Don't…you…dare say it's because you love me!” Tears flowed unchecked down her cheeks, dripping off her chin. “How dare you try to justify your actions by sugar-coating them with words of love.” Her voice rose as hysteria and madness took over her heart and mind.
“I'm doing this for your own good!” he shouted back.
“My own good? No you're not. You're doing this for your own good.” Her eyes widened. “Oh…my God. You never loved me.”
“How can you say that—”
“If you did, you wouldn't be able to imagine a second without me, so—go to hell!” She jabbed a finger toward the door, her body vibrating with unrestrained rage and pain. “Get out.”
"Please try to understand. You're better off without me."

Bound by the Mist

Her body hummed with the tension of standing under his gaze as the minutes crept by. Then his hand moved, reaching toward her cheek.
She moved a step back, her heart fluttering. When he prowled another step closer, she stumbled back a little bit farther. Another step closer, another step back. This dance continued with only the accompaniment of her pulsing blood. Then she tripped.
Closing her eyes, she prepared for a jarring fall. Arms around her waist caught her. Arms? She trembled and her eyes shot open. He loomed over her and was holding her quite closely. Too closely. Every muscle of his lower body pressed against her, but most alarming was the bulge that pushed against her hip. Heat flooded her core, snapping her mind awake.
She needed out of his arms. Now. Nearly hyperventilating from the conflicting fear and desire that swept over her, she tried to right herself. No matter the maneuver, she ended up placing her hands on his shoulders, her hands buried in his hair. His soft, silky hair. This was bad—the sinking of her stomach told her so. He made falling way too easy.
Her hands slipped down to his chest. His muscles rippled under her fingers, the sensation shooting straight to her core. Oh God, this was even worse. If she didn’t leave soon—in fact, right now—he’d make a goner out of her.
Mesmerized, she looked up into turbulent gray eyes, their blue pupils dilated. Blue? They should be black. Then all coherent thought fled as his lips descended toward hers.
